During a recent cabinet meeting, Wilmer Mejía, director of Colombia’s Financial Information and Analysis Unit (UIAF), revealed that he intends to deliver an intelligence report of about 130 pages to the Attorney General’s Office, presenting an alleged corruption network tied to the nation’s healthcare system. Mejía noted that the inquiry covers numerous legal entities, financial organizations, clinics, and hospitals, and describes methods that may have been employed to hide liabilities and reroute public resources through intricate financial operations.

The official stated that authorities uncovered indications of a corporate structure allegedly used to move resources between health insurance providers and healthcare institutions, with financial transfers occurring both within Colombia and abroad. He also noted that the findings could lead to actions by the National Tax and Customs Directorate (DIAN) and the Attorney General’s Office, although he did not publicly identify all of the individuals or entities allegedly involved.

The report also recalls that the Attorney General’s Office had previously warned about ongoing investigations into a possible large-scale misappropriation of healthcare funds over the past decade. Among the practices under investigation are alleged irregularities in reporting enrolled beneficiaries, manipulation of information to obtain additional public funding, improper reimbursement claims for medicines and medical procedures, fraudulent claims related to Colombia’s mandatory traffic accident insurance (SOAT), inflated contracting costs, and the creation of healthcare institutions allegedly used as shell entities.

According to the referenced statements, these actions may have diminished the resources designated for patient care and are still under examination by the appropriate authorities. At this point, the accusations involve alleged irregularities that remain under formal investigation.
